Eliminate Sources of Moisture: Key to Stopping Cockroaches and Ants
Of all the measures against cockroaches and ants, cutting off the water is the one that pays the most and the one least often done. The reason is that almost nobody sees the water: there is no puddle and no obvious drip, there is a pipe that sweats, a damp cloth and a trap lined with biofilm. And for a cockroach that is enough. The figure that puts it in perspective: it can last weeks without eating, but only a few days without drinking.
- Water is the cockroach’s limiting resource: without it, it cannot sustain a population.
- Most of the available water in a house is not a leak — it is condensation and residual damp.
- Below 60% relative humidity the environment turns hostile for them; above 70% they thrive.
- The damp cloth in the sink and the saucer under the plant pot are permanent drinking stations.
- Drying out without treating will not clear an established colony, but it removes its ability to grow.
How much water they need (and why that is an opportunity)
An adult cockroach can survive a long time without food, scavenging minimal traces: a spot of grease, a piece of cardboard, soap. But water it cannot improvise. It needs to drink regularly, and nymphs even more so.
That makes water the population’s weak point. Remove the food and they find other food; remove the shelter and they move. But remove the available water and the population cannot sustain its size. That is why an immaculate house with a leak under the sink has cockroaches, while an untidy but dry house usually has far fewer.
Where the water you cannot see is
- Condensation on cold-water pipes. It does not drip: the surface is permanently wet. Run your hand under the pipe below the sink.
- The fridge condensate tray. It sits at the back, low down, and is almost never cleaned. Standing warm water in a dark corner: the best address in the house for a cockroach.
- The sink cloth or sponge. Wet all night, every night.
- The plant saucer and the pet bowl in the small hours.
- Traps lined with biofilm. Not only water: organic matter on the pipe wall. Water and food in one place.
- The base of the washing machine and its drain hose.
- Towels and mops stored without drying.
Leak or condensation: telling them apart
It matters because the fix is different.
- Dry everything thoroughly with paper and wait 12 hours without using the unit.
- If it is evenly wet again across the whole pipe surface and varies with the heat of the day: condensation. Fixed by ventilating and, if needed, insulating the pipe.
- If one point drips and the rest is dry: a leak. Tighten the joint or replace the washer.
- If the unit floor is swollen or stained but dry today: there was a leak and it has been fixed, but damp timber is still shelter. It needs drying out or replacing.
The seven-day plan
- Day 1: empty the unit under the sink, dry it and check every joint. Put kitchen paper under the pipes.
- Day 2: check the paper. Whichever came up wet marks the exact point to repair.
- Day 3: clean the fridge condensate tray and vacuum the rear coils.
- Day 4: change the sponge and cloth routine: wring out and hang up, never left in the sink.
- Day 5: remove saucers from indoor plants and lift the pet bowl overnight.
- Day 6: treat the traps with an enzymatic product to break down the biofilm. Bleach does not do this job: it runs straight through.
- Day 7: measure with a hygrometer. Above 70%, consider an extractor fan or a dehumidifier for that area.
What to expect: drying limits, it does not kill
It is worth setting the right expectation. Removing water does not eliminate an established colony: the population stops growing, becomes stressed and gets easier to control, but it does not disappear on its own.
What does happen, and it is very useful, is that treatment works far better. A thirsty cockroach consumes more bait. That is why professional service after fixing the moisture performs considerably better than one carried out with the leak still running.

If you are booking a service, fix the drip first. Treatment of a kitchen with an active leak gives half results and the population recovers. Half an hour of plumbing improves the performance of everything that follows.
