Districts we serve
The central canton of Alajuela is large and very uneven. We serve:
- Alajuela centro, San José, Desamparados (El Coyol) and Río Segundo: the city, the airport and the industrial corridor.
- San Antonio, San Rafael, Sabanilla, Carrizal and San Isidro: the higher, cooler area toward Poás.
- La Guácima, Turrúcares, Tambor and La Garita: the low western area, the hottest and driest in the canton.
On the same route we cover Belén, Flores, San Rafael de Alajuela and the corridor toward Atenas and Grecia.
Heat changes the calendar
Downtown Alajuela sits at about 950 meters, some 400 lower than Cartago, and La Garita and Turrúcares are lower still. The difference in average temperature looks small on paper and is huge in practice, because insects are cold-blooded: their life cycle runs at the pace of their surroundings.
With more heat, cockroaches complete their cycle in less time, mosquitoes go from egg to adult faster and ant colonies grow larger in the same season. The practical result for clients in Alajuela is that there is no clear low season here like the one you feel in Cartago: the pressure holds almost all year, and the interval between preventive services tends to be shorter.
Mosquitoes and dengue: the number one issue
Aedes aegypti thrives in exactly Alajuela’s conditions: hot, low, urban and with clean standing water available. That is why Alajuela has historically been among the cantons of the Greater Metropolitan Area with the most dengue pressure, while Cartago barely shows up.
What decides the outcome is not the fogging, it is the breeding site. An adult killed today is replaced within a week if the breeding site is still there. The ones we find again and again:
- Gutters and downspouts clogged with leaves, holding water you cannot see from below.
- Tires, buckets, wheelbarrows and tank lids in the backyard.
- Pet water bowls, plant saucers and plants kept in water.
- Uncovered tanks and water basins, and the classic laundry sink that hardly gets used.
Professional treatment combines removing and treating breeding sites with a targeted application where adults rest, which is shaded vegetation and the lower part of walls. Details are on the mosquitoes page, and the article on dengue breeding sites has the full checklist for your home before the technician arrives.
La Garita, Turrúcares and Tambor: scorpions and dry wood
The low western part of the canton is another world: hotter, drier and with a pronounced dry season. Two things change there.
Scorpions. Dry heat, stone walls, retaining walls, stacked firewood and pastures with leaf litter are the ideal shelter. They come into the house looking for moisture and prey, almost always under the door and through the drain. The treatment is on the scorpions page, and scorpion prevention at home covers the steps that lower the risk in the meantime.
Drywood termites. The dry climate favors species that live inside wood with no need for contact with soil or moisture: beams, door frames, wood floors, furniture. The sign is different from subterranean termites: small piles of very fine sawdust, like ground coffee granules, under a piece of furniture or a frame. The termites page explains how to tell them apart, because the treatment is not the same.
The airport, El Coyol and the warehouses
Río Segundo and El Coyol concentrate free trade zones, distribution centers, agribusiness and everything that orbits the airport. In that environment pests are imported: they travel on pallets, in corrugated cardboard and in containers, and jump from one warehouse to the next with the movement of cargo.
The work focuses on the receiving dock, the perimeter and the trash room, with labeled, numbered stations outside to intercept pests before they get in. Food plants also deal with flies, which are controlled with ultraviolet light traps in processing areas and drain sanitation, not with aerosol sprays. And anything regulated needs complete documentation: map, log, technical data sheets and a report under the supervision of a licensed chemist. See rodent control and Decree 37308-S.
How a visit works in Alajuela
- We apply early or late in the afternoon. At midday, Alajuela’s heat evaporates surface product faster and it works less well. Also, Aedes bites mostly at dawn and dusk, so targeted mosquito treatment is scheduled in those windows.
- Yard fogging, without wind. Outdoor treatments are scheduled at times with little wind; in strong wind the fog blows away and does not settle where it should.
- The low route is grouped. La Garita, Turrúcares and Tambor are far from downtown; those appointments are arranged in the same block, so it helps to give your district when you book.
- Free trade zones with advance coordination. Entry through security and dock hours, confirmed with the manager before the visit.
- Who shows up. A trained, uniformed technician, green-label products and a service report.

Frequently asked questions about pest control in Alajuela
- Do you charge a travel fee to Alajuela?
- No. Downtown Alajuela, Río Segundo, El Coyol, La Guácima, La Garita and Turrúcares are within our Greater Metropolitan Area coverage and there is no travel fee. The price is the published one: house up to 100 m² ₡39,900, up to 200 m² ₡49,900 and over 200 m² ₡59,900, VAT included.
- How soon can you get to Alajuela?
- The date is confirmed on WhatsApp in under an hour. From our office in Guachipelín de Escazú, via Route 27 and the General Cañas highway, downtown Alajuela and the airport corridor are 35 to 50 minutes away depending on traffic; La Garita, Turrúcares and Tambor take a little longer and are grouped into the same route block. We work 24 hours a day, every day.
- What is the most common pest in Alajuela?
- Mosquitoes. The heat and low altitude of the canton give Aedes aegypti the right conditions all year, which is why Alajuela ranks among the cantons of the Greater Metropolitan Area with the most dengue pressure. In La Garita, Turrúcares and Tambor, scorpions and drywood termites add to the list; in Río Segundo and El Coyol, warehouse rodents.
- Does mosquito fumigation solve the problem once and for all?
- It kills the adults and treats the breeding sites we find, but if a breeding site with water is left, the population bounces back within a week. That is why, before the visit, it helps to empty tires, buckets and plant saucers, and to unclog gutters. If you have not fumigated in the last 6 months, it takes two applications and the second one is charged; the 30-day check only applies once the plan is complete.
