Districts we serve

We work in all eleven districts of the central canton of Cartago:

  • Oriental, Occidental and El Carmen: the urban core, the ruins and the downtown shops.
  • San Nicolás (Taras): warehouses, industry and retail along the highway.
  • Aguacaliente (San Francisco) and Guadalupe (Arenilla): residential areas growing toward the south.
  • Dulce Nombre, Quebradilla and Corralillo: a mix of homes and farms.
  • Tierra Blanca and Llano Grande: the high ground on the slopes of Irazú, agricultural and much colder.

On the same route we cover the neighboring areas: Tres Ríos and La Unión, El Tejar de El Guarco, Paraíso and San Rafael de Oreamuno.

Climate rules: 1,400 meters above sea level

Downtown Cartago sits at about 1,400 meters above sea level, some 250 meters higher than San José and well above Alajuela. That is not a postcard fact: it changes which pests survive and which do not.

  • Less mosquito pressure. Aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue, becomes less effective as altitude rises and temperature drops. That is why downtown Cartago reports far fewer dengue cases than the lower, hotter cantons of the Central Valley. It is not that there are no mosquitoes; they are just not the main problem.
  • More moisture and more cold. The fog and drizzle coming down from Irazú keep relative humidity high for much of the year, and homes are shut tight to hold in the heat. That combination is what defines the canton’s pest list.

Moisture, termites and mold

Wood that stays damp is the habitat of subterranean and dampwood termites. In Cartago, the spots where we find them most are door frames facing the patio, the underside of stairs, wooden ceilings and beams near an old leak.

The early sign is almost never the insect itself: it is paint that looks blistered, wood that sounds hollow when you tap it, or mud tubes along the baseboard. If that is happening to you, the termites page explains how to tell it apart from simple moisture damage.

That same moisture, with homes shut against the cold, favors dust mites in mattresses, rugs and curtains: they do not bite and you cannot see them, but they trigger allergies and asthma, and in Cartago it is a frequent request that people do not associate with a pest.

After every downpour, damp-soil invertebrates also push indoors: ants, pill bugs, millipedes and slugs, which come in along the baseboard, through the patio drain and under the door.

Highland farming districts: the field rodent

Tierra Blanca, Llano Grande, Corralillo and Quebradilla grow potatoes, onions, carrots and vegetables. While the crop is standing, the field mouse lives quietly outdoors. When harvest comes or the cold sets in, it moves to anything with a roof: supply storerooms, tool sheds, house attics and open-sided barns.

There the job is not just putting bait inside. It means closing off the perimeter, checking access to the attics and placing labeled stations outside to intercept rodents before they get in. The rodent control page details the method and the signs worth checking.

Historic center and older buildings

Much of Oriental and Occidental is old construction: wood, adobe, mezzanine floors, ceilings with dead space above them and party walls shared with the shop next door. That architecture creates two specific problems.

  • The attic space is one continuous corridor. A rodent that gets in through one shop can travel through several without ever coming down to the floor.
  • Structural wood exposed to moisture has been in service for decades, and that is where termites do the most expensive damage, because by the time you notice, a beam is already compromised.

That is why downtown inspections go up into the attic and check party walls, not just the kitchen and bathroom.

Taras and the industrial area

San Nicolás concentrates warehouses, plants and large retail along the highway. If the client is in food, packaging or pharmaceuticals, the requirement is not only having no pests: it is being able to prove it in an audit. There we deliver a map with numbered stations, an inspection log, technical data sheets and safety data sheets for every product, and the report signed by the technician under the supervision of a licensed chemist.

The decree that requires a written pest control plan for regulated establishments is explained in our article on Decree 37308-S.

How a visit works in Cartago

  • Grouped by block. Cartago appointments are arranged along the Florencio del Castillo highway route and grouped on the same day so we do not cross the Valley twice.
  • The highland districts go together. Getting up to Tierra Blanca or Llano Grande takes much longer than reaching downtown, so those appointments are coordinated in the same time block. When you book, give your district, not just "Cartago".
  • In the rainy season we apply early. Outdoor and garden treatments are scheduled in the morning: the afternoon drizzle washes the product away before it can work.
  • Who shows up. A uniformed technician in a branded vehicle, with green-label products and a service report. You can verify that we are a pest control company licensed by the Ministry of Health by following this guide.

The pests we treat most in Cartago

  • Termites: the direct result of damp wood.
  • Rats and mice: fields and crops in the highland districts, attics downtown.
  • Dust mites: homes shut against the cold, allergies and asthma.
  • Ants: they come in after every rain along baseboards and drains.

If you are not sure what you are dealing with, the pest guide lists the signs of each one, and the scope of the service is put in writing in your quote.

Frequently asked questions about pest control in Cartago

Do you charge a travel fee to Cartago?
No. The central canton of Cartago, from downtown to Taras and Aguacaliente, is within our Greater Metropolitan Area coverage and there is no travel fee. We also serve Tierra Blanca and Llano Grande; those visits are simply grouped into the same route block. The price is the published one: house up to 100 m² ₡39,900, up to 200 m² ₡49,900 and over 200 m² ₡59,900, VAT included.
How soon can you get to Cartago?
The date is confirmed on WhatsApp in under an hour. From our office in Guachipelín de Escazú, the drive crosses the Valley on the Circunvalación and the Florencio del Castillo highway: Taras and downtown are between 45 minutes and an hour and a quarter away depending on traffic; Tierra Blanca and Llano Grande add another 20 or 30 minutes uphill. That is why Cartago appointments are grouped on the same day, and it helps to give your district when you book. We work 24 hours a day, every day.
What is the most common pest in Cartago?
Termites, because wood stays damp with the fog and drizzle coming off Irazú: door frames facing the patio, the underside of stairs, ceilings and beams near an old leak. Next come rodents, field rodents in Tierra Blanca, Llano Grande and Corralillo and attic rodents in the historic center, and dust mites in homes kept closed against the cold. Mosquitoes matter much less than in San José or Alajuela because of the altitude.
Do you charge for a termite inspection in Cartago?
No, the inspection is free. The technician checks the attic, frames, baseboards and party walls, determines whether it is subterranean termites, dampwood termites or just moisture damage, and puts the scope of treatment in writing in the quote.
