Districts we serve

All six districts of the canton: Santa Lucía, San Roque, San Pedro, Barva (the town center), San José de la Montaña and San Pablo. Santa Lucía and San Roque are the districts where we work the most, followed by San Pedro and the town center.

Which pests show up in each area

1. Santa Lucía and San Roque, the lower part

Residential developments and row houses built on former coffee land, right next to Heredia: cockroaches in the kitchen and drains, mosquitoes in yards with rainwater and rats coming in from the surrounding coffee farms.

2. Downtown Barva and San Pedro

Adobe and wattle-and-daub houses with wooden beams, posts and ceilings around the church of San Bartolomé: termites in the structure, woodworm in old furniture and rats in roomy attics.

3. San José de la Montaña

Fog, cold, and houses and cabins built entirely of wood on the road to Sacramento: dampwood termites in the pieces that touch the ground, field mice and slugs in the garden.

Termites in adobe, wattle and wood

What people ask us for most in Barva is rat and mouse control. Next come thermal fogging for cockroaches and mosquitoes and termite treatment. Compared with the rest of the country, Barva asks for more termite treatment, because of the way it was built.

Barva is one of the best preserved colonial towns in the Central Valley. Around the park and the church of San Bartolomé there are still adobe and wattle-and-daub houses with beams, posts, doors and ceilings of wood that have been in place for decades. Drywood termites get in through a crack, live inside the piece and give no sign until fine dust appears on the floor or wings show up on the window frame at the start of the rainy season.

Higher up, the kind of termite changes. In San José de la Montaña the fog, the drizzle and the cold of the Barva volcano slopes keep wood damp almost all year, and many houses and cabins are wood from floor to roof. That is where dampwood termites work, looking for the buried post, the old leak above the ceiling and the terrace with no eaves.

The termite inspection is free. The technician checks beams, frames, wooden baseboards, built-in furniture and the attic with a detector. Structural treatment is quoted per 100 m² and includes six months of follow-up. The article does my house have termites explains what to look for.

Rats between the coffee farms and the streams

Barva still has coffee farms between the neighborhoods of the middle part of the canton. Coffee gives rats and field mice shade, leaf litter and food all year, and the streams that run down from the mountain toward Heredia serve as a path from one neighborhood to the next. At harvest or pruning time they move toward the houses along the edge.

In an adobe house the station goes where the wall meets the floor and in the attic, and holes are sealed with mesh and mortar. In a newer development in Santa Lucía or San Roque the work focuses on the perimeter, the drain boxes and the eaves. On later visits the stations are checked and the bait is replaced. If you have already heard noises at night or found droppings, the article mice in the house, what to do explains what to do that same night.

How to prepare your house on the day of the visit

In Barva many houses have built-in furniture, wooden closets and an attic with a hatch. So the technician can reach everything, leave the attic access clear, move whatever furniture can be moved and put away food, dishes and the pet's bowl.

After the treatment you wait one hour before going back in, air the house out, and it is best not to mop the baseboards that day. The full list, with the do's and don'ts, is in how to prepare your house before and after fumigation.
