Food and Cockroaches: Why Sealing Food and Trash Matters
Did you know cockroaches don't just eat crumbs? They also feed on grease, paper, glue, and even soap. Any open food source attracts them and helps them reproduce. The good news: in Costa Rica, fumigation and pest control against cockroaches and ants work much better once you cut off the accessible "buffet." CDC and EPA guidelines agree: storing food in closed containers and managing trash properly are the foundation. Here are some tips by zone. Combine this with cleaning and less moisture; if you're already seeing signs of cockroaches, acting early helps.
Keep cereal, flour, and sweets in airtight jars, never in open bags or cardboard boxes.
Tips by zone
- Pantry and cabinets: keep cereal, flour, crackers, and sweets in jars or airtight containers, never in open bags or cardboard boxes. Cockroaches gnaw through cardboard and get into bags.
- Fruit and bread: don't leave ripe fruit or bread out in the open in the kitchen; store them in the fridge or in containers with lids. Cockroaches come out to feed mostly at night.
- Trash: a can with a tight-fitting lid, sealed bags, and frequent pickup; in hot weather or if cockroaches are already present, take it out daily. We cover the full rules below.
- Pets: don't leave a full food bowl out overnight; pick up and wash the bowls after they eat. Both dry kibble and wet food are very attractive to pests.
Trash and food scraps: the full rules
An open can or a leaking bag is like a lit-up sign for cockroaches, ants, and even mice. With Costa Rica's heat and humidity, organic waste turns into a buffet within hours. The CDC recommends closed containers and taking out the trash regularly:
- A can with a lid that actually closes: partially covering it isn't enough. Wash the inside of the can when you change the bag to remove odors and stuck-on residue.
- Bags tied securely: knot or clip the bag shut before taking it out; if it leaks or tears, replace it right away.
- Take it out often: at least every one to two days, daily if it's hot out or cockroaches are already present. They're most active at night.
- Sink and strainer: don't leave scraps in the sink; use a strainer and empty it into the trash. If you have a garbage disposal, use it and rinse afterward.
- Where you put the can: keep it away from where you cook or eat, and check for liquid leaks underneath.
- Yard: outdoor cans should have lids and stay away from doors and windows; cockroaches and rodents follow the smell.
A trick few people bother with
Check the back of the cabinet and the corners at the rear: there's often an old package, crumbs, or an open bag you can no longer see from the front. Cockroaches find it anyway. A "deep pantry clean" once a month, pulling everything out, checking dates, and sealing what's left, cuts down on surprises.
